Day 4: Zanzibar

We start the day with a boat ride to the offshore island of Changuu, also known as Prison Island. The island once housed disobedient slaves when Zanzibar played a central role in the East African slave trade. Now the island is known for its giant tortoises that were brought here from the Seychelles in the early 20th century. After returning, our afternoon is spent at a spice plantation to learn about the various spices and fruits that are grown on the island. The evening is free to experience the interesting night market at Forodhani Gardens near the hotel, or visit one of the many restaurants in Stone Town. Tembo House Hotel. Meals: B•L

Day 5: Zanzibar

We head over to the east side of the island today to visit Jozani Forest. Exploring the area on a boardwalk, we discover and learn about this large mangrove forest. During our excursion, be on the lookout for the endangered red colobus monkeys and many other birds and mammals. After returning to Stone Town, there is free time to explore and shop. Our evening concludes with a seafood dinner on the oceanfront terrace at the Serena Hotel. Tembo House Hotel. Meals: B•L•D

Day 6: Zanzibar – Arusha

In the morning, we depart Zanzibar for northern Tanzania. If it’s a clear day, Mt. Kilimanjaro is visible as we fly to Arusha. After arriving, we eat lunch and take a tour of a coffee plantation. In the evening, we enjoy dinner and relaxation at our hotel. The African Tulip Hotel. Meals: B•L•D

Day 7: Arusha

We drive to Ng’iresi Village to begin our day at Mzee Loti’s farm to learn about the Wa-arusha culture. After a traditional lunch prepared by the local women, we trek up Lekimana Hill for a view of the beautiful landscape, then visit a primary school, development projects, a waterfall, and a traditional healer. The African Tulip Hotel. Meals: B•L•D

Day 8: Arusha – Tarangire National Park

It’s time to load up in our 4WD Landcruisers and head out on safari! The seating in the vehicle allows everyone to have a window seat and the top opens for an even better view. Our first stop is Tarangire National Park. This park is known for large herds of elephants and its concentration of wildlife on the baobab-filled plains. Tarangire Sopa Lodge. Meals: B•L•D

Day 9: Tarangire National Park – Serengeti National Park

Traveling further west today, we drive up the Great Rift escarpment and head into the Serengeti plains. On our way, we visit Olduvai (Oldupai) Gorge, which was made famous by the archeological duo of Louis and Mary Leakey. They discovered numerous hominin fossil remains in this area, which has been called the cradle of humankind. After visiting the small museum at the site, we continue west and visit a Maasai boma to learn about their culture. Our day ends with a game drive in the legendary Serengeti en route to our lodge. Serengeti Sopa Lodge. Meals: B•L•D

Day 10: Serengeti National Park

We spend the day looking for wildlife on the vast plains of the Serengeti National Park, which is larger than the state of Connecticut. Of course, the “Big Five” (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, rhino) are on our list to locate, but keep your eyes peeled for cheetah, giraffe, hyena, wildebeest, hippo, zebra, antelope, and the hundreds of other mammal and bird species. Serengeti Sopa Lodge. Meals: B•L•D

Day 11: Serengeti National Park – Ngorongoro Crater

After our morning game drive in the Serengeti, we head into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The region is home to the Ngorongoro Crater, the largest inactive, intact volcanic caldera in the world. The floor of the crater is abundant with wildlife, which we explore tomorrow. We enjoy an evening at our lodge on the crater rim. Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge. Meals: B•L•D

Day 12: Ngorongoro Crater – Karatu

We descend over 2000 feet into one of the greatest natural wonders of the world. This stunning landscape is arguably one of Africa’s best-known wildlife-viewing areas. We explore the crater floor on our last game drive of the trip. After ascending the crater wall, we travel to our retreat for a farewell barbeque dinner. The Retreat at Ngorongoro. Meals: B•L•D

Day 13: Karatu – Amsterdam

After brunch and a relaxing morning, we drive east towards Kilimanjaro International Airport with some stops for souvenir shopping along the way.
